A QR code to share your Wi-Fi

The hassle of sharing Wi-Fi

In a café, hotel, office or holiday let, the same question keeps coming up: “What's the Wi-Fi password?”. Writing it on a chalkboard means typing a long password without mistakes, and if you change it for security, every sign has to be redone.

Two kinds of Wi-Fi QR code: the difference

With QR Boost you can choose either in the first step of the editor. The static one has the advantage of connecting instantly: the phone offers “Join network” without going through any website and without an account. In return, the password is baked into the pattern and, if you change it, you have to print a new one.

The dynamic one goes through qrboost.com and, when scanned, opens a lightweight page showing:

• The network name.
• The password, with a “Copy password” button.
• The security type.

The scanner copies the password, opens their Wi-Fi settings and pastes it in. That's a couple of extra taps, in exchange for being able to change the password whenever you like without touching the sign. For a business that refreshes its password regularly, it's worth it.

How to create it, step by step

1. Open the editor, choose the Wi-Fi type and decide whether you want it static (joins instantly, can't be changed) or dynamic (editable, with stats).
2. Enter the network name (SSID), the password and the security (WPA/WPA2/WPA3, WEP or no password). Tick the box if it's a hidden network.
3. If it's dynamic and the Wi-Fi is temporary (an event or trade fair), set an expiry date in the Expiry step.
4. In Design, add a frame with text such as “Free Wi-Fi” and your logo in the centre.
5. Download it as PNG, SVG or PDF: the static one straight away with no account; the dynamic one after creating your free account.

Tips

• Use a guest network separate from your business network: your devices stay out of reach and you can change its password without affecting anyone else.
• Change the password now and then and update the QR code's details in My QR codes. The printed signs keep working.
• Where to put it: on tables, at reception, on the bedroom door or next to the router. 3 × 3 cm is enough for close-up scanning.
• Contrast and text: dark code on a light background, plus a call to action such as “Scan to connect”.
• Bear in mind: anyone who can see the QR code can see the password. Don't place it somewhere you don't want it to reach, such as a shop window facing the street.

Free and private

Creating and editing your Wi-Fi QR code is free, with no scan limits and no expiry. The stats show how often it's scanned, but we don't store IPs or any data about the people scanning.
